Golf cart clicks but will not move: what it is and what the fix costs

A golf cart that clicks and goes nowhere is the most common no-start call we take around Lake Havasu City, and it has a short list of causes. The click itself is useful information: it tells you the key switch, pedal micro-switch, and solenoid coil are all working. What is not working is the connection between the pack and the motor. The usual answer is a solenoid at $100 to $250, and the usual mistake is buying one before testing the pack and the cables.

Check this first (ten minutes)

Note the sound. A single sharp click each time you press the pedal is the solenoid pulling in. Rapid chattering usually means low pack voltage. Complete silence is a different problem: key switch, pedal switch, or the tow/run switch.
Find the tow/run switch. Electric carts have one, usually under the seat. In TOW position the cart will not drive. It gets bumped more often than anyone would guess.
Check the pack voltage. A 36V pack should read around 38 volts fully charged, a 48V pack around 50 to 51. Substantially under that and the batteries are the story, not the solenoid.
Look at the battery terminals. Corrosion or a loose cable creates resistance that shows up exactly like this. On a cart kept at a dock, splash off a boat gets to the terminals faster than owners expect even in a climate this dry.
Check the charger is unplugged. Many carts have an interlock that prevents driving while plugged in.

Why the diagnosis order matters more than the part

A solenoid is a cheap part and it is easy to sell. The problem is that a tired battery pack produces the exact same symptom, because a pack that reads 50 volts sitting still can collapse to 30 volts the instant a motor asks it for two hundred amps. Swap the solenoid on that cart and it works for a week.

That is why the visit starts with a load test on each battery individually, then pack voltage under load, then a voltage-drop check along the main cables, then the solenoid, then the controller. Cheapest and most likely first.

The Lake Havasu City angle

Two local patterns produce most of these calls. Summer heat. National Weather Service climate normals put Lake Havasu City’s June through September mean daily highs between 101.9°F and 109.3°F, and the hottest temperature ever recorded in Arizona, 128°F, was measured right here on June 29, 1994. Heat evaporates electrolyte out of flooded lead-acid batteries and cooks the plates, so a pack that is two or three years old and has not been watered on schedule is a prime candidate for the chattering version of this fault. Dock and boat-adjacent corrosion. Lake Havasu City is dry overall, averaging just 4.16 inches of rain a year, so it is splash and wet gear off a boat, not humidity, that corrodes a main cable or terminal on Island and Parker Strip carts, and a corroded main positive cable adds resistance right where the solenoid needs current.

What a solenoid replacement includes

The pack is disconnected safely, the old solenoid comes out, the new one goes in with the cables cleaned and torqued properly, and then the cart gets driven. While the tech is in there, the cables and terminals get inspected, because a corroded main cable is both a cause of this symptom and a fire risk. If the pack tested marginal, you will be told that too, with a number.
